Frequently Asked Questions and Handbook

Year 1 to Year 3 undergraduate degree programme students with academic performance of a minimum CGPA 2.5 are eligible to apply. Some institutions may require a higher CGPA score. At the same time,
Programme-specific exchange programme may have a different requirement, please check with the respective Programme accordingly.

Yes. However, HSUHK would recommend Year 3 students to apply for exchange study in Semester 1 in their final year so that you will be at HSUHK in the final semester to work on the fulfilment of the graduation requirement. Otherwise, you are required to submit a written request for exchange in Semester 2 with justifications and study plan to HSUHK Exchange (exchange@hsu.edu.hk) to be forwarded to individual School for approval and arrange a mandatory consultation session with Programme Director/Academic Advisor before nomination. For exchange study in final year, students should be aware that you may not be able to graduate in time.

At the same time, students should take note that it may take considerable time for students to receive the transcript from the partner university and apply for credit transfer. Therefore, you may not be able to graduate in time if you go on exchange, be it Semester 1 or 2 in your final year. To apply for graduation, please see [Important Dates] Graduating upon completion of Semester 1, Semester 2 or Summer Term on Registry’s website by clicking HERE.

Yes. Newly-admitted year 2 & 3-entry students are welcome to apply in January after you have obtained your academic results in Semester One.

For ad hoc Special Round Applications which may take place in September or October to fill places for Semester 2, newly admitted senior year-entry students are NOT eligible to apply as you have not studied long enough at HSUHK to be considered by partners.

Yes. The language proficiency requirements are as follows:

– Partners in most locations have waived any English proficiency requirement for our students. Otherwise, in general, the requirement is IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall Band 6; or TOEFL 60-78 in internet-based test

– Students should have a basic command of Putonghua to study programmes in Mainland China and Taiwan.

Both tests are accepted worldwide as proofs of English proficiency while IELTS is now more widely recognised.

Yes. We accept the result of IELTS or TOEFL as long as it is within the two-year validity period of the test.

It is assumed that students should have a basic command of Putonghua to study in Mainland China and Taiwan. If students have taken any public examination, you may provide a copy of the test result.

In addition, an online recommendation from a teacher is required. A recommendation form will be enclosed in the Outbound Student Exchange Programme application when it opens.

You are also required to submit a personal statement in English (150 words on your reasons and expectation for studying at the preferred host institution).

No. You only need to pay HSUHK’s tuition fee. You are NOT required to pay tuition fee to the host institution but may have to pay administrative fees, such as those for registration, issuance of a student card and/or insurance etc to the host institution.

Application will open in January on a rolling basis after you have obtained your academic results in Semester One. A new round of application is called only if places are still available.

Yes. If your application is successful, HSUHK will nominate you to the host institution and you are required to fill in another set of application forms for the host institution. The host institution has the final judgment on the admission of exchange students and has the right to reject our nomination.

Scholarship for Exchange will only be available to those successful applicants who fulfil the requirement laid down by the University’s Scholarship and Financial Assistance Committee.
