Expanding Partnerships and Collaborations in Malaysia

HSUHK further strengthened its global partnerships and expanded its connections with higher education institutions in Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region during a delegation visit to Malaysia from 19 to 22 October 2026. Led by Professor Joshua Mok, President, the visit focused on establishing new institutional partnerships, deepening existing collaborations, and exploring new opportunities for academic and student engagement.

During the 4-day visit, the delegation established new partnerships with higher education institutions in Malaysia and the Philippines, explored prospective collaboration with the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM), and further developed HSUHK’s longstanding partnership with Taylor’s University (Taylor’s). The delegation also engaged with regional higher education leaders at AppliedEdu Xchange 2026, renewed HSUHK’s cooperation with the United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia, and shared its experience in postgraduate education, international engagement, and student development at Sunway University.

As part of the visit, President Mok signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Dr Estrella O Simon, Founding President of First City Providential College (FCPC), the Philippines; and Professor Dr Zuraidah Binti Abd Manaf, Vice President (Research and Development and Commercialisation) of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysia, which provide frameworks for future collaboration in areas encompassing interdisciplinary research, academic resource sharing, short-term exchange programmes and collaborative learning initiatives.

On 22 October, the delegation visited UNM, where discussions with university delegates identified areas of mutual interest in academic and research collaboration, including joint programmes and mobility opportunities. The meeting was joined by Professor Shahir Liew, Vice Provost of Research and Knowledge Exchange; Professor Joanne Lim, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences; Dr Saizi Xiao, Associate Dean of External Engagement of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences; and Dr Tricia Yeoh, Associate Professor of Practice and Director of the Asian Institute for Policy and Engagement.

The delegation also visited Taylor’s on 21 October, to discuss ways to further develop the partnership established since 2015. Received by Professor Barry Winn, Vice-Chancellor and President; Professor Darren Bagnall, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic); and Mr Izwal Mazlan, Head of Global Mobility, Academic and Industry Partnerships, the delegates built on the existing partnership in student mobility and explored opportunities to advance the collaboration in academic initiatives, dual programmes, and exchange activities for PhD students, to create more diverse academic exchange and global learning opportunities.

HSUHK’s participation in AppliedEdu Xchange 2026 provided a platform to connect with university leaders and educators from across the region. President Mok delivered the opening keynote address, “From Employability to Purposeful Impact: Reimagining Higher Education for Industry-Relevant, Society-Ready Graduates.”, sharing HSUHK’s distinctive “Liberal + Professional” education model and its approach to integrating broad intellectual development, professional preparation, experiential learning, and human values.

Through these engagements, HSUHK continued to broaden its partnership network in Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region, while identifying new opportunities for academic collaboration, research exchange, and global learning. The visit reflected the University’s continued commitment to building meaningful international partnerships that create opportunities for students and faculty and foster sustained institutional exchange.
